Clarksville, which is just over 1/2 square mile, is one of the densest neighborhoods in Austin, with more than 4000 residents. Once the home for former slaves, it’s considered a historic district with its community center and Sweet Home Baptist Church located there. It was founded by an emancipated slave named Charles Clark in 1871. Clarksville has some steep hills and a creek and had mostly unpaved streets until the mid-1970s.
Today, Clarksville still has descendants of the original residents living there, and land values have sky-rocketed because it is now a much sought after neighborhood for Austinites who want to be close to downtown.
[Gallery not found]Lady Bird Lake, the hike and bike trails, the clubs and shops of 6th Street, the 2nd Street District and Austin night life are within walking distance. Whole Foods and Bookpeople, two Austin originals, are close-by.
There are a number of homes that have been built on lots formerly occupied by older homes as well as homes that have been restored to their former glory. Historic plaques are found on many residences. Clarksville is a neighborhood that’s very interesting and enjoyable to tour, either by car or on foot. Homes are eclectic and charming. I love to walk around Clarksville!
